Is this trip to Fiji right for me?

If you’re looking for an experience that combines sea and sun with culture and tradition, then a Discovery Tour in Fiji is for you. You’ll swim among sharks, protect the ocean and get an epic tan while doing it too. Your trip won’t be short of cultural experience. You’ll live amongst the locals, help out in the community and get to taste some of the most delicious Fijian dishes out there.

This trip is open to all travellers over the age of 18. For most of your trip, you’ll be living with a local host family who’ll welcome you into their homes. However, while you’re busy with conservation activities, you’ll stay in shared accommodation near the ocean.

Day 1 - Arrival in Nadi

Our staff will collect you from the airport and take you straight to your accommodation in a traditional Fijian village. Use this time to settle in, freshen up and interact with your host family. They’ll be eager to hear about where you’re from and show you the surrounding area.

It’s a universal concept that people bond over food, so we’ve planned a welcome dinner for you and your group. The catch is that you’ll help prepare it. You’ll cook with taro (a root that tastes similar to artichokes), make roti  (a round flatbread), and prepare tavioka, a traditional Fijian dessert, out of cassava (similar to yams).

Day 2 - Community work, Garden of the Sleeping Giant, and Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pools

To give you a better understanding of the community and the hard work that goes into the maintenance of a village, you’ll assist the locals with their day-to-day tasks. You can help with light renovation work, care for a vegetable garden or assist with the feeding of farm animals.

After lunch, you and your group will make your way to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. It’s a horticultural paradise that hosts over 2000 types of orchids. The gardens flowery perfume is one you’ll not soon forget!

You’ll finish off the day with a hike up to the Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pools. There’s no better way to relax and unwind than a dip in the geothermal therapeutic mud or the hot water springs that feel like a personal jacuzzi.

Day 3 – Shark Conservation

You’ll travel to Pacific Harbour where you’ll spend the next two days helping out on our Shark Conservation Project

The aim is to protect sharks around Fiji and fight against their declining population. As one of the top predators in the marine food chain, sharks play a vital role in this ecosystem.

You’ll help shark researchers collect data during survey dives and learn how to identify sharks in their natural marine habitat. You may even see more than five species of sharks like bull and reef sharks. As we take safety seriously, this activity is weather dependant.

Day 4 – Plant mangroves

During your final day at the Conservation Project, you’ll help plant mangroves to offset the carbon for all the flights we book. We calculate the emissions of your flight and plant enough mangroves to neutralise them.

Besides reducing carbon emissions, mangroves are one of the most important ecosystems in the area. They help marine life conservation and act as nurseries for many different fish species.

Day 5 – Suva and Colo-i-Suva Park

Get ready for a day rich in culture and history as you visit Fiji’s capital city, Suva. Like most former colonial governed states, Suva has many fascinating areas to explore. You’ll get to visit:

  • Architectural buildings like the Sacred Heart Cathedral Suva and parliament building
  • The Fiji Museum
  • Suva’s Thurston Gardens and Albert Park

To end off the day, you’ll visit Colo-i-Suva Forest Park. It’s a lush rainforest of tropical plants and vivid birdlife. Among the wildlife are 14 different bird species, including spotted fantails, Fiji goshawks, sulphur-breasted musk parrots, Fiji warblers, golden doves. It offers tranquil hiking trails, waterfalls and clear natural pools where you can swim and relax. It’s truly a nature lover’s paradise.

Day 6 – Cooking class, Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple and lovo dinner

Back in Nadi, you’ll start your day with a fun cooking class. You’ll take home the recipes of the island’s delicious dishes brimming with Fijian and Indo-Fijian flavours. The cooks will share their traditional cooking techniques and give you helpful tips and entertaining stories.

After you’ve had your fill of Fijian cuisine, you’ll make a stop at the Sri Siva Subramaniya temple. It’s the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the few places outside India where you can see traditional Dravidian architecture. Enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and ornate carvings that depict a number of Hindu gods.

To end the day, you’ll experience a traditional lovo dinner in a nearby village. The “lovo” is an underground natural oven where specially selected and heated rocks are placed at the bottom of a pit. Various ingredients, from meat to vegetables are then wrapped up in palm fronds or banana leaves and placed over the coals. The pit is filled with earth and left to 'slow cook' for anywhere from two to three hours. The result is a delicious, organic and natural meal.

Day 7 – Departure from Nadi

On your last day, you’re free to explore Nadi on your own. You can use the time to catch up with your souvenir shopping, explore the city or relax on one of the beaches. Don’t forget to breathe Fiji one last time before you catch your flight back home.
