Is this Tanzania Gap Adventure right for me?
If you’re on your gap year, then this project is a great way to embrace local culture whilst having a meaningful impact in the communities you visit.
Are you passionate about standing up for the human rights of women and children? Are you happy to get your hands dirty to build a classroom for a rural community? If so, then this is the trip for you!
You’ll start the trip by immersing yourself amongst a Maasai tribe in a rural Maasai village. You will get to have a positive impact in a community by working as a team to build a classroom alongside our local builders. Finally, you will be supporting human rights campaigns with women and children. All this combines to make it a very special and memorable gap year adventure!

What will I do on this trip?
On this Gap Adventure, you'll get involved in three different projects as follows:
Maasai Cultural Project
You’ll be working in a Maasai community and you’ll have the chance to help with a range of tasks. Here are some examples of what you’ll do:
- Learn more about the Maasai people and their culture
- Help with daily chores like cooking and collecting wood
- Teach English to children in the community
- Help build classrooms and other school buildings
Building Project
With the help of an experienced builder, you’ll construct classrooms and other school buildings. It will be tough work, but knowing that you’re making a long-term positive impact on the local community will make the effort worthwhile. You will do things like:
- Work alongside experienced local builders
- Dig foundations, mix cement, build walls, or construct a roof
- Give completed buildings a fresh coat of paint
Women’s Empowerment and Human Rights Project
You'll assist with a variety of activities to empower women, promote gender equality and tackle human rights issues in Tanzania. This is what you’ll get up to:
- Raise awareness about the importance of women’s empowerment
- Promote gender equality amongst children in schools and in the community
- Run skill development classes for local women
- Research cases and conduct interviews to find out about human rights issues on the ground
- Give presentations about human rights to help raise awareness
Where will I work?
This project will see you traveling to two different locations in Tanzania: Arusha and Endulen.
Arusha
You’ll be based in Arusha for the Women’s Empowerment & Human Rights aspect of the Gap Adventure. Arusha is a city in Tanzania at the foot of Mount Meru. It’s home to over 400,000 people and has a buzzing city centre with exciting colourful markets. Communities on the outskirts are less developed, with dirt roads and less modern buildings.
You’ll do your office work, like research and report writing, at the Projects Abroad Human Rights Office (PAHRO). The office is well-equipped and our staff are there to answer your questions. You’ll also do fieldwork in local communities. These areas will usually be more remote and rural, and people here don’t have access to legal advice.
We’ve partnered with a local women’s organisation and a lot of your time will be spent working with them. You’ll also have the opportunity to work in a juvenile detention centre.
Endulen
You will be based in Endulen in the Ngorongoro National Park, an ancient area rich in natural beauty and wildlife. Your project work will be in a Maasai community within the national park. This community is rural and you’ll spend your days surrounded by the African savannah. The semi-nomadic Maasai people live in traditional homes without electricity or running water, so you’ll get to experience a very different way of life.
What are the aims and impact of this trip?
The aim of this trip is to construct a classroom that will have a long-lasting positive impact on the local community as well as empowering women and standing up for the human rights of women and children.
Tanzania has a history of human rights issues, particularly in terms of women’s and children’s rights. As a volunteer, you’ll work with qualified lawyers and help them advise local people. You’ll also help with raising human rights awareness, and promote women’s empowerment. You’ll do this by giving presentations and workshops about human rights.
Through research work and assisting local lawyers, you’ll also help provide free legal assistance to those who can’t afford it. The communities where we work are usually remote and the people here don’t have the funds to speak to lawyers when their rights are violated.
Projekthandlingsplaner

Food and accommodation
In Arusha, you'll stay with a host family. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Tanzania and have a truly unique experience. You live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer who is also on the Gap Adventure programme.
In Endulen, you’ll live in a shared house in the Maasai community with all the other Gap Adventure volunteers. This is an opportunity to live in an area that no other tourists get to visit!
Your room in Arusha and Endulen will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe. Your programme fee includes three meals a day.
