Conservation Work in Peru Recognised at Primate Conference

Projects Abroad’s Conservation Project in Peru recently received recognition for the work they have been doing at our base, the Taricaya Research Centre. The conservation project’s animal rescue centre has been recognised by the Peruvian government as the best and most effective of its kind in the country.

Projects Abroad Launches Global Shark Campaign

Launched in 18 countries across four continents this month, the Projects Abroad Global Shark Campaign comprises a worldwide awareness and action movement centred on the plight of sharks. The campaign aims to spread the word about the threats to and misconceptions about sharks to as many people as possible across the globe.

Discovery at the Inca Project in Peru

The great Inca road, Qhapaq Ñan in the Amaybamba Valley, is once again beginning to reclaim its status. Through field research, Projects Abroad volunteers and archaeologists have been able to identify and record that it once served as an important main route along the Inca trail.

Care volunteers in Senegal expand their classes

Care volunteers in Senegal often work with Talibes at the ASF Talibe Centre. Up until very recently, volunteers in Senegal only taught male children; this is no longer the case as more and more young girls are coming to the centre to attend classes.

New spider monkey baby in Taricaya

Projects Abroad has a Conservation Project in the Amazon Rainforest in Peru on a reserve called Taricaya. This project focuses on the animals of the forest and the environment. Recently they witnessed the group of spider monkeys they released 18 months ago interact with the newcomers.

New Medical Placement in Kenya

With the increase in Medical volunteers in Kenya, as well as the increase in PRO volunteers, Projects Abroad Kenya has been on the lookout for new Medical placements. Projects Abroad volunteers will have the opportunity to work with St Anthony, a mission health centre.

PAHRO’s Fadama Legal Assistance Programme progresses in Ghana

Projects Abroad Human Rights Office (PAHRO) makes significant progress with the Fadama Legal Assistance Programme (FLAP) in the slum community in Old Fadama in Accra. The Human Rights team of volunteers and staff have been creating awareness and empowering the community to know about their basic human rights.

Welcome Home to Grangemouth High School

After raising funds for over a year, a group of 24 staff members and students from Grangemouth High School in Scotland joined a Care & Community project in Ghana. The group worked in a mix of day care centres and schools in the area over two weeks.

English Club in Chitwan – A Fun Approach to Learning!

Care volunteers provide an English club for girls at a children's home in Nepal. The main aim of the club is to improve the children's reading, but at the same time the children have found the club to be enjoyable and seem more inspired to read their favourite story books.

Danish Mother and Daughter volunteer together at the Care Project in Kenya

Lotte Pedersen, a day-care manager in her home town of Skive in Denmark, travelled to Kenya with her 6-year-old daughter Olivia to volunteer at the Care project. Both Lotte and her daughter Olivia were placed at Hope Children’s Ministry, where the family’s presence has been a great addition to the centre.

Volunteers in Vietnam Throw Birthday Party at Care Placement

Projects Abroad volunteers often use their own initiative and go outside their expected duties to make a difference at their placements. An example of this dedication was recently shown by Care volunteers in Vietnam.

First Aid Course for Teachers in Togo

Teaching volunteer Sophie Greiner recently organised a first aid course for the teachers at her placement. Sophie, from Munich, Germany, was placed at l’École Newton in Lomé, Togo’s capital city. Thanks to Sophie, the teachers are now equipped to deal with minor medical challenges, which could save a person’s life!

The Cochabanner - Journalism Project in Bolivia

In 2005, Projects Abroad teaching volunteer Scott Liddle began a small publication with a group of students from Cochabamba’s Universidad Mayor de San Simón. As Scott’s time in Bolivia was drawing to a close, he approached the Projects Abroad office to present the idea of The Cochabanner as a full time journalism project.

A Lesson in Dental Hygiene at a Care Project in Argentina

Volunteers at the Copa de Leche care placement recently organised a lesson with the children to teach them the importance of brushing their teeth. Volunteers spend a lot of time with the kids at the Copa de Leche, and it was noticed that many of the children have very dirty teeth and at a young age, were already losing teeth due to decay and lack of care.

Botswana Conservation Project Moves to a New Camp

Projects Abroad is pleased to announce that it is moving to its very own new camp within our study area of Kwa Tuli reserve in Botswana. We have named our camp 'Motswiri Camp', motswiri is Setswanan for Leadwood.

Ghana Volunteers Launch Water Sachet Recycling Project

One of the most frequent things new volunteers are surprised by in Ghana is that water is commonly sold in plastic bag sachets instead of bottles. Each sachet costs roughly 5 pence, however, the cost to the environment is far greater. Since December 2012, Projects Abroad Ghana and its volunteers have recognised this, and are now working together with the patients of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital to do something proactive about it.
